What We Include
How Our Brass Door Knockers Are Made
Our collection of brass door knockers are manufactured from high quality, solid brass. Brass is melted and cast into moulds for each design of door knocker. Each mould is of the unique shape of each knocker and features the intricate etching in it to create the unique designs. Once the molten brass has cooled and become solid, the moulds are emptied to reveal the core brass parts of each door knocker.
For our solid brass door knockers, these parts are then hand polished to create a high shine before assembling. Every door knocker is cast, finished and assembled by hand by master metalworkers.
The Benefits of Brass
Brass has been used for door furniture for centuries, primarily due to its durability, strength, sturdiness and highly attractive colouring. Being corrosion resistant, it is the perfect material for a door knocker that is located outdoors and exposed to the elements, as it won't rust like other metals. When outdoors, brass will age gracefully over time, taking on a duller, more antique finish and it will acquire a unique patina. Brass is also naturally anti-bacterial and anti-microbial, making it perfect for a frequently used part of your door.
The Original Brass Animal Designs
Our range of solid brass animal door knockers are the original designs, having been sold by us for over seven years to over 3,000 happy customers.
Designed in the UK, our classic brass bumble bee, dragonfly, fox, owl and shell door knocker designs have been copied and imitated by a range of different manufacturers. However, by buying a Coates & Warner door knocker, you are guaranteeing that your brass animal door knocker is the classic, original design and produced from the highest grade brass.
Suitable For Composite, UPVC & Wooden Doors
All of our brass door knocker designs are suitable for fitting to a composite, uPVC or wooden door. The fixings we supply with each door knocker can be used across these door materials.
Sadly, our brass door knockers are not currently suitable for hollow metal doors, this is due to the type of fixings we supply. If you're fitting one of our knockers to a new front door, we recommend that you check with the manufacturer of the door, as fitting a door knocker may void any warranty that you have.
Door Knocker Frequently Asked Questions
Yes you can! All door knockers can be removed from a door, simply unscrew or unbolt your old door knocker to remove it. Depending upon your door material, you'll then need to fill in the holes with a suitable filler. Once filled, simply fit your new door knocker and ensure the new holes aren't too close to the old holes to ensure it has a strong fixing.
Yes, we recommend that if your door furniture (letterbox, door knob etc) is currently brass, then you should match your door knocker finish so it is aesthetically consistent. Our brass knockers will arrive with a high shine finish, if your brass door furniture has aged slightly and has taken on a duller, more antique finish, don't worry, over time our door knocker will age too and the finish will match in time.
Striking plates are designed to protect your door during door knocker use. Unless otherwise stated, most of our brass door knocker designs have integrated striking plates. Our brass dragonfly door knocker design is the only design where it is fixed separately from the knocker itself. For further information about whether or not a striking plate is integrated with a particular design or supplied separately, please see the individual product descriptions.
The placement of your door knocker is entirely down to your personal preference and the style of your door. Many people prefer to install their door knocker in the centre, which works well for solid wood, UPVC, or composite doors with a central panel. However, if your door has windows that make a central placement impractical, you can choose an alternative spot such as on a side panel or below the letter box. Wherever you decide to place it, we recommend attaching the door knocker directly to the door itself to ensure the best sound resonance when in use.
Our brass door knocker finishes will age over time, naturally taking on a duller, more antique finish with a slight patina. Brass door knockers placed within coastal areas will require more regular maintenance due to the higher salt content in the air. For more information on how our door knocker finishes age over time, head to our cleaning and maintenance guide for more information.
Its true, there are a wide range of similar brass door knockers on the market. However, we know that ours are of an unrivalled quality, are in many cases the original design that has since been copied and mass produced using lower standard materials, and our door knockers are hand finished and quality checked before being dispatched to our customers. With a Coates & Warner door knocker, your guaranteeing quality.
Unfortunately we can't customise a door knocker with a unique finish, such a bronzed brass. We only offer our door knocker designs in solid brass, chome plated, nickel plated or black powder coated.
